Recognized for his comprehensive and technical approach to teaching, Douglas Kevin Wilson, baritone, has established himself in the New England teaching community as a strong force for classical and musical theater teaching . A four-time winner of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition and recipient of the Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera Council (regional), he has performed leading roles in La Cenerentola, La Traviata, Bastien und Bastienne, The Tempest, Ariadne auf Naxos, Cavalleria Rusticana, Hansel und Gretel, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Luisa Miller, Le nozze di Figaro, The Merry Widow, La vie Parissiane, Saul, and Xerxes. He has given recitals and performed with ensembles in Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic; performed in masterclasses with Marilyn Horne, Gary Arvin, and Patricia Wise, and most recently  performed with Opera Boston in Luisa Miller and New England's premier of Nixon in China.  Mr. Wilson will be singing a recital this August in Stockholm, Sweden.

 

     Mr. Wilson's students have been heard with prestigious ensembles such as; Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Lyric Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Opera Boston, Opera San Jose,  Brooklyn Opera, Bronx Opera, American Repertory Theater, Cantata Singers, Boston Orpheus Ensemble, White Mountain Bach Festival, Hastings Symphony, Back Bay Chorale,  Boston Bach Ensemble, Opera Del West, Providence Singers, performed on Broadway, in National Tours of Camelot, Rent, and Avenue Q, off-Broadway, and in summer stock and regional theaters throughout the US, Europe, and Great Britain. His students have also been winners in the Met Competition (District) and the NATS Boston and Rhode Island Song Festival competitions. Two of his students have received Fulbright Scholarships.

      Mr. Wilson has completed over 150 hours of observation working with speech therapists, physical therapists, and master teachers.   He has presented lectures on "Choosing Appropriate Literature for Young Singers," "Musical Theater Techniques for the Classical Singer," and "Belting the Healthy Way!" He is consistently active in workshops, masterclasses, and research in vocal physiology and pedagogy.

     Mr. Wilson's primary teachers have included Maitland Peters (current), Carole Haber, Kay Creed (New York City Opera), Gustavo Halley (La Scala), Marilyn Govich, and Tony Gonzales.  He studied stage directing with Marc Astafan (Metropolitan Opera) and voice pedagogy with Mark St.Laurent. Mr. Wilson is a member of the New York Singing Teachers’ Association and the National Association of Teachers of Singing and serves on the board as treasurer and director of the Song Festival Competition for the Boston chapter. Mr. Wilson is on the voice faculty at Brown University and maintains private studios in New York, Boston, and Providence.
